What is an operating system?
An operating system is the most important program that runs on a computer. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs and be bootable. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and how they are stored, directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

What is an external drive?
An external drive is a drive that supplies its own power and has a fan mounted outside the computer system enclosure. It connects to the computer through a cable usually called USB or Firewire.
