What is a spindle motor failure?
Spindle motor failure can result from excessive heat due to a bearing failure. The increased heat from the bearing failure will expand the drive shaft and seize the spindle motor. Your drive will suddenly be inaccessible and inoperative. This may cause a loud whining, a grinding noise, or even high-pitched screeches.

What is an electronic failure
Electronic Failure is damage to the circuit board on the bottom of the hard drive. This board is basically the brains of the drive, and is where the computer interfaces to the hard drive. An electrical failure can occur at any time. Even brand new drives are not immune to having electrical failures. They can be caused by faulty components, improper installation (i.e. electro-static discharge grounding out the board), and excessive heat. To help prevent these failures, the system should be kept clean and well ventilated.
