What is an Operating System?
An operating system is programming which acts as an interface between the user of a computer and the computer hardware. The purpose of the operating system is to provide an environment in which the user may run software applications. The operating system enables the user to have the capability of using the computer's resources such as the CPU, memory, storage devices and printers.

Partition
A drive must be partitoned in order to be used even if it only has one partition. Partitioning a drive is defining certain areas of the hard drive for the operating system to use. Partitioned sections of the drive are known as 'volumes' which are given a letter, like C or D.
