What is Unix?
Unix is a popular operating system, developed by AT&T in 1969, that was key in development of the Internet. UNIX allows more than one user to access a computer system at the same time. An early version of UNIX, which was used by many colleges and universities, incorporated TCP/IP and made Internet connections possible.

What is drive 'firmware'?
Firmware is the set of instructions stored in a special 'servo' section of a hard drive by the manufacturer. It is sometimes easier to recover data with this problem than mechanical failures, but more difficult than software related recoveries. Firmware is responsible for the behavior of a hard drive.
