State-of-the-art equipment doesn’t operate itself. A data recovery lab technician is a fusion of a watch maker/repair person (i.e. can work on very delicate, minute mechanical devices) and a heart surgeon (i.e. a highly specialized job that requires interpreting many, many indicates and messages, where a mistake or a slight wrong move of the hand can turn out to be fatal to one’s data).

wow, nice post, I was wondering the same thing. and found your site by bing, many userful stuff here, now i have got some idea. bookmarked and also signed up your rss. keep us updated.
The best advice to D.I.Y data recovery attempt is to make a clone. of your original drive. This way you ensure that you move your valuable data to another stable platform. You should only use off-the-shelve software for media with no or very few bad sectores. Otherwise you risk “grinding” the media to fine dust. No one would be able to recover that drive ever!
MB… The only thing I would add to the flat rate price thought is to investigate the “other fees” that may be involved. Many places offer flat rate recovery, but charge additional amounts for every little detail. Including surcharges for downloading of data to CD’s or DVD’s, FTP/email of data, extra copies of files etc. They make up for their extremely low advertised flat rate, with the nickel and dime scenario.
What should recovery cost? Well looking for a provider, I would stick with a flat rate price set-up. Gone are the days of ball park figures. It’s true, some recoveries are more difficult than others requiring further cost and efforts. But it’s just a good way of doing business. It’s a fluid, easily understood process during a time that is horribly difficult and confusing for the customer. No need to put more pressure on the victim!

HDS– if it’s been running for that long… there’s definitely a problem. Any clicking or ticking noises? Was it running slowly before it failed?

I tried to run PCtools drive copy. But I get a lots of errors. It is also running for 12 hours now. Any suggestions?
If recovery software continues to run and gets various error messages, it could be causing more damage to the physical drive, and thus make the data loss permanent.
